Sight-seeing, 2003
installation
Trying to reach the Acropolis of Athens by feet, following the city signs, the walker feels lost and frustrated in a terribly dense and chaotic contemporary city center. In this installation, in a building located a few meters away from the hill, the reference to Robert Smithson’s “non-sites” attempts a reversal: if a non - site indicates, between other things, some loss of the notion of place, Acropolis of Athens is absent, here in Athens, since it seems to exist only as a city sign, or as representation. The sight-seeing leads to a non-sight of this fundamental symbol of architecture and the polis.
