Vastitas, 2001

painting and silkscreen on concrete floor

Vastitas was presented at the art gallery of Greengate Building, University of East London. The floor of the exhibition space (20x5 meters) was covered with color stains and silkscreened with plans and maps in different scales. The viewers/visitors were invited to walk on the artwork, thus having a feeling of real and mental movement and displacement simultaneously. The pattern on the floor seemed to grow biomorphically while reproducing a geometry - that of the map and the architectural plan. In many spots the pigments were worn out, making the artwork look like a trace on the material. Names of places from the planet Mars with mythical connotations (Arcadia Planitia, Tempe Terra, Elysium Mons, etc.), were inscribed on the floor.
